Las Vegas is rich in activities! From one end of the valley to the other there is always something to do.
For those who are looking for some adventure, try exploring the Red Rock Conservation area. Red Rock is famous for its hiking, rock climbing, cycling, horseback riding and exploring. Neighboring areas offer even more.
Town of Blue Diamond is a small quaint town, but surrounding it are some of the best single track Mountain biking trails in America. It is also home to a large burro population which can be seen throughout the area. McGhee’s Bike Outpost is one of the few businesses allowed in the town and it helps serve those wishing to have a fun day out riding. There are also designated parking areas just off SR-160.
Between Blue Diamond and Red Rock are Bonnie Springs Ranch and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. Bonnie Springs is home to an old town wild west show, petting zoo, pony rides and a museum. Springs Mountain Ranch is a former 520 acre working ranch which is a valley favorite for Summer Theatre. Spectators enjoy a grass covered field and traveling performances.
Further North visitors will find access to Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon. Here the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort greets locals and tourists for time on the slopes. Mount Charleston is the home to rental cabins and even a hotel. Temperatures are typically about 20 degrees cooler on the mountain.
Further to the east, you will find the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary and Gilcrease Orchard. These are favorites for families all over. Go visit fresh air and buy some fresh food. They offer a wonderful variety of crops.
In the Northeast part of the Las Vegas valley you will find lots of power. That is because the northeast is home to Nellis Air Force Base and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Nellis AFB is the home of the famous “Thunderbirds” and annual air shows. The Speedway not only hosts the NASCAR races, but also off-road racing, ¼ mile drag strip, motorcycle racing, drifting competitions, and the Electric Daisy Carnival. Year round attractions to the speedway include the Richard Petty Driving Experience, Exotics Car Racing, Dream Racing. While you are out there make sure to stop by at the Shelby Museum, which is the home of Shelby American.
In the same area as the Speedway are the Nellis Dunes, another play area for those who have off-road toys. Motorcycles, quads, 4×4’s and more frequent the area daily. Southern Nevada has a large population of off-road racing enthusiasts. Some of the most notable are the Herbst racing team and the Collin Motorsports group, both of whom take on the infamous Baja 1000 annually.
To the east of the Las Vegas valley is Lake Mead. At approximately 247 square miles, it is the largest man-made lake in North America. It is common to hear locals exclaim about their fishing adventures, jetski and waterskiing adventures in addition to those that prefer to kayak, scuba dive, or just relax. Perched on the southern end of the lake are closed railroad tracks and tunnels that provide adventure for mountain bikers. Further inland is a famous mountain biking haven, Bootleg Canyon. The area is home to great trails for those on two wheels and also those who wish to fly. There are zipline excursions set up in the area offering additional adventure for locals and tourists alike. While in the area, take a look up. You will probably see skydivers descending on the Boulder City airport near the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
If that wasn’t enough fun for the Boulder City area, there are a few more areas of interest for those that like art and guns. For the art lovers there is the annual Art in the Park, which brings artists from all over to show and sell their works. There are also events on the train, typically with artists and wine rides during other times of year. The Desert Hills Shooting club is more like a country club for gun enthusiasts. They offer a “course” which people can drive their golf cart from station to station shooting different types of targets with for skeet/shotgun, pistol, rifle and even machine guns! This is another must see.
In addition to the adventures listed above, Las Vegas and Henderson have many other activities peppered throughout the valley. Visitors and Locals can both enjoy go-kart racing, shooting ranges, putt-putt facilities, arcades, live music, designated remote control cars/planes/boats areas, horseback riding and classes/event for just about anything a person could desire.
